I’m curled up in my berth still picturing the Stephano’s sinking lights through Wilma McLean Tucciarone’s eyes when I smell the morning coffee brewing in the galley. Those of us off watch start rising, brushing teeth, and getting into our diver’s long underwear for the day. The weather’s calm and sunny. Small birds called Wilson’s storm petrels dart over the surface of the water searching for baitfish. Sometimes they land on the Quest to catch a breather. We like seeing them. Some of the crew offer them pieces of bread. They are hunters like us, a long way from home.

It’s common for us to have more and more “visitors” after we have been anchored up for a day or so over a wreck. The birds and sea creatures seem to get used to the boat being here and approach us more closely. Not just birds, but often dolphins, whales, sharks, and big schools of tuna. In the later part of the summer, we often see tropical fish that have been spun off from eddies on the edge of the Gulf Stream.
